Musician picks!
Why some of our very own think you should see this performance!

Courtney Hershey-Bress - Principal Harp
"Ending the season with Mahler’s 3rd Symphony is going to be thrilling. Mahler is my favorite orchestral composer and I look forward every season to playing one of his works. Andrew Litton will be conducting so you can be sure that the weekend will be filled with passion and energy. "

Michael Thornton – Principal Horn
"The guys in the brass section wouldn’t forgive me if I didn’t mention Mahler in my top picks (and I wouldn’t forgive myself, either!). Over the past few years, Maestro Litton has set the standard for Mahler performances, and this is bound to be another exceptional event. Huge brass moments abound, lovely wind chorales, and rich, deep string sections will make this a sonic adventure you won’t want to miss. I’m so glad I have my seat reserved right in the middle of it!"

John Sipher – Principal Trombone
"Being a trombone player, Mahler's 3rd Symphony has got to be number one on my bucket list of all pieces to perform. Mahler wrote three of the longest and most expressive trombone solos in the entire orchestral repertoire. Being able to perform this for the first time with an orchestra will be the fruition of a long time dream."

Jason Shafer - Principal Clarinet
"Performing any Mahler symphony is a thrill for the orchestra; I feel like I'm transported to another world when I get the chance to play any of them. Mahler loves to write for the clarinets to put "bells up in the air" (in other words, hold it like a trumpet), so I'm always stretching out my neck a bit extra when playing his music! The 3rd Symphony is an amazing journey, and one well worth taking."

Leah Kovach – Viola
"Although there’s nothing I hate more than picking favorites when it comes to composers, if I had to pick a favorite orchestral composer it would be Mahler! Such incredible depth in his writing. I loved what the Colorado Symphony and Andrew Litton brought to the 2nd symphony performance last season, so I'm look forward to revisiting his music!"

Roger Soren - Bassoon
"Mahler 3rd Symphony, any Mahler is amazing to play and hear! With Litton and Michelle DeYoung along with a huge Colorado Symphony and Children's choir, it's sure to be a memorable event!"

Brook Ferguson - Principal Flute
"This will be a true celebration of symphonic repertoire and the final 16-17 master works concert. And we are going to join forces with Denver’s own international opera sensation, Michelle De Young. Your Colorado Symphony is alive and thriving. Our community is thriving. Come celebrate this with us. As Schiller so beautifully proclaimed, "Pain says: Pass away! But all joy seeks eternity, seeks deep, deep eternity!” That’s what we’ll be envisioning and communicating to our audience. Deep joy and gratitude for another year of well-earned success and prosperity."

Phillip Hembree – Assistant Principal Trumpet
"No orchestral season is complete without a Mahler symphony, and Mahler’s Third Symphony is a unique musical experience that will have you cycling all of your emotions during the course of the performance. In addition to a larger than normal orchestra, a large choir and a mezzo-soprano soloist add to the massive work. This concert is for those who love a mix of orchestral and operatic effects combined on one stage."

Julie Thornton – Piccolo and Flute
"I always love Mahler! I played Mahler 1 in the Seattle Youth Symphony when I was in High School and had tears in my eyes at the end. This is what made me want to work towards a career in music! We played Mahler 3 when I was at Northwestern University and I had tears in my eyes again at the end. Mahler’s music is so moving and powerful."
