Adagio for Strings & Augustin Hadelich

Courtney Lewis, conductor
Augustin Hadelich, violin

BARBER Symphony No. 1, Op. 9
BRITTEN Violin Concerto, Op. 15
BARBER Adagio for Strings
ELGAR In the South, Op. 50

For the follow-up to his 2015 debut with the Colorado Symphony, guest conductor Courtney Lewis leads the Symphony and Grammy Award®-winning Augustin Hadelich, through a program of 20th century works that crosses the Atlantic at the midway point. The two works by American composer Samuel Barber – Adagio for Strings and Symphony No. 1, or Symphony in One Movement – are high points of his early career, and the former is known for its emotive effect on audiences. We also hop the pond for a pair of works with British origins: Benjamin Britten’s Violin Concerto and Edward Elgar’s In the South.

Musician picks!
Why some of our very own think you should see this performance!

Susan Rockey Bowles - Cello
"Augustin is a Grammy Award® winner we have enjoyed working with several times. I never tire of Barber Symphony #1 and Adagio - they are beautiful standards."

Tristan Rennie - Assistant Principal Basson
"I've had the pleasure of spending some summers performing at the Marlboro Music Festival alongside the phenomenal violinist Augustin Hadelich, and can confidently say he is truly one of the greatest musicians performing today!"

Julie Thornton – Piccolo and Flute
"I am looking forward to Augustin Hadelich. I played with him a few years ago and was blown away by his beautiful artistry! When I heard about the challenges that he had overcome in his life I became a forever fan."

Leah Kovach – Viola
"I’ve been a big fan of Augustin Hadelich, and I think he’s an incredible live performer. I hope we are treated to one of his amazing encores- please clap a lot! Britten is one of my favorite 20th century composers, and I think he’s often underrated. The violin concerto is an incredible piece- both sublime and heart-rending."

Brook Ferguson - Principal Flute
"I wouldn’t dream of missing anything performed by Augustin. He is a major, major talent. And Britten is one of my favorite composers of all time. It will be a rare and fine concert all around."

Peter Cooper - Principal Oboe
"I love the Barber 1st Symphony and it is rarely played, and Augustin Hadelich is one of the greatest violinists in the world today."

Claude Sim – Associate Concertmaster
"This concert will be a spectacular and bold program that will feature one of the most phenomenal violin talents today . Hadelich is a stunning musician and will bring the lesser known Britten Concerto to life. I’m also looking forward to the Barber Adagio and the timeless beauty that it contains."
