Musician picks!
Why some of our very own think you should see this performance!

Phillip Hembree – Assistant Principal Trumpet
"This concert series is the one I am most looking forward to playing, since it combines two of my favorite composers, Shostakovich and Bartok. Both Shostakovich's Cello Concerto, and Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra are energetic and engaging works that will captivate your imagination. You will not want to miss this concert!"

Jason Lichtenwalter – English Horn and Oboe
""I like when Peter Oundjian visits because he will sometimes borrow Yumi's violin during rehearsal and demonstrate what he wants musically from the orchestra. The first time I heard Kodaly's Dances of Galanta I thought, "Yikes; how can the oboes possibly double-tongue that fast?""

Roger Soren - Bassoon
"Bartok Concerto for Orchestra is the greatest composition of the 20th century. The bassoon duet, initially a duet that starts the movement, returns again with 3 bassoons, as if the section had a baby, and I get to play that part! Paired with another masterpiece, the Shostakovich Cello concerto with our own Silver Ainomäe, it is for me the best program all season."

Julie Thornton – Piccolo and Flute
"I love the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra. This is something that we all studied in school and played in our auditions to win our jobs. It is a wonderful orchestral feature and I can't wait to play it with this amazing group of musicians! Also the Cello Concerto with Silver will be thrilling. He blew me away last year with his Dvorak!"

Leah Kovach – Viola
"It's always exciting when we feature our own musicians from the orchestra as soloists- reminds me what an incredible ensemble the orchestra is! The Shostakovich cello concerto has Shostakovich's characteristically rhythmic and groovy sections as well as tragic slow melodies. Bartok Concerto for Orchestra is one of the pieces that I've worked on selections for auditions, but never had a chance to play the whole thing through!"

Claude Sim – Associate Concertmaster
"This program will be sure to wow those that are in attendance that weekend. From start to finish, the concert will have it all. Our own colleague Silver Ainomäe will display his intense take on the Shostakovich Cello Concerto, but the CSO itself will take center stage as soloists in the brilliant and dazzling Bartok Concerto for Orchestra."

Courtney Hershey-Bress - Principal Harp
"Peter Oundjian returns to conduct a fabulous program. Peter is very loved by the musicians of the CSO and we have not seen him in a while, so this is a special week. The program features our principal cellist playing Shostakovich's Cello Concerto which will be wonderful. I am very excited to end the program with Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra. I love Bartok's melodies and edginess in his pieces. There are two fabulous harp parts in this piece and it is very challenging to play."

John Sipher – Principal Trombone
"An early exposure to orchestral music to me, Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra captivated me the first time I ever heard it. A real tour de force for the orchestra, everyone gets to show off in the piece. And with our principal cellist performing Shostakovich's Cello Concerto No. 1, there will be a complete overflow of virtuosity in just one program."

Peter Cooper - Principal Oboe
"Silver is a world class soloist and the Bartok Concerto for Orchestra is a masterpiece."

Jason Shafer - Principal Clarinet
"One of the things I love about this program is that it features two 'concertos'. The first, by Shostakovich, will show off the amazing playing of our principal cellist, Silver. But the other "concerto" (by Bartok) has no single soloist, instead featuring the virtuosity of the whole orchestra; it's a thrilling work. I also have to mention that the opening piece, Kodaly's Dances of Galanta, has a huge clarinet solo that is one of my favorites out of all the orchestral literature!"

Brook Ferguson - Principal Flute
"This concert is a winning combination of all star forces. Oundjian leading the Concerto for Orchestra and Ainomäe taking on the Shostakovich Cello Concerto will show off our ensemble in the most favorable light. It should be a celebration of virtuosity across the board because the entire orchestra has a concerto that night!"
