Brahms Conducted by the Dragon

Christopher Dragon, conductor
Jeffrey Kahane, piano
Colorado Symphony Chorus, Duain Wolfe, director/conductor

BRAHMS Nänie for Chorus and Orchestra, Op. 82
SCHUMANN Piano Concerto in A minor, Op. 54
BRAHMS Symphony No. 3 F major, Op. 90

Join Christopher Dragon in his second season as Associate Conductor for the Colorado Symphony as he teams with pianist and former Colorado Symphony Music Director Jeffrey Kahane, who filled the post from 2005 to 2010. For his return to Denver, Kahane tackles the singular piano concerto of Robert Schumann. Leading off the program, the Brahms opener, Nanie -- that's German for funeral song -- is a meditation on mortality. After the dramatic start, Schumann's energetic and eclectic Piano Concerto provides some lightness, and the melodic masterwork that is Brahms' Symphony No. 3 follows.

Musician picks!
Why some of our very own think you should see this performance!

Michael Thornton – Principal Horn
"We have a special place in our hearts for former music director Jeffrey Kahane. His amazing artistry and graceful sensibilities will be on full display in the Schumann A Minor Piano Concerto. In this exciting program, our past meets our future as Associate Conductor Christopher Dragon will lead us in the Brahms 3rd Symphony, which is replete with gorgeous horn moments that our entire section find deeply satisfying. While I am personally very grateful for my wonderful family (my wife Julie is our piccolo player), it is fun that Brahms sort of dedicates this symphony to those who enjoy the single life, using a motive that became his own bachelor motto 'Free but happy!'"

Jason Shafer - Principal Clarinet
"Somehow, I have never had the opportunity to play Brahms' 3rd Symphony, and I'm so excited to get the chance now! It's an amazingly beautiful piece of art that moves me every time I hear it. The Schumann Piano Concerto is also one of my all-time favorite piano concertos, and we are always happy to have Jeffrey Kahane return to perform with us."

Claude Sim – Associate Concertmaster
"What a classic meat and potatoes program this is! Programs like this are the reason many of us classical musicians chose to pursue our dreams. Our Associate Conductor will lead us through this beautiful journey of Brahms and Schumann. To top off the already excellent repertoire, we welcome back to the stage our beloved former Music Director, Jeffrey Kahane."

Peter Cooper - Principal Oboe
"'Nanie' for Chorus and Orchestra starts with a long and gorgeous oboe solo. I have never played it in the orchestra and I’m looking forward to the opportunity. It is always wonderful to hear our former Music Director, Jeffrey Kahane play a concerto. He is an amazing artist."
