Mozart Performed by Jason Shafer

Brett Mitchell, conductor
Jason Shafer, clarinet

DUKAS La Péri, Poème dansé
MOZART Clarinet Concerto in A major, K. 622
RIMSKY-KORSAKOV Scheherazade, Op. 35

Principal Clarinetist Jason Shafer makes his debut as soloist performing Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's beloved Clarinet Concerto. This work provides a showcase for the talents of Shafer, who joined the Symphony at the beginning of the 2013/14 season. One of Mozart's last works, it highlights the interplay between the orchestra and the clarinet soloist. The program concludes with Nikolai Rimsky Korsakov's inimitable Scheherazade. The 1888 work is a musical adaptation of "A Thousand and One Nights" (also known as The Arabian Nights), and the Middle Eastern influence is clear as it interprets the tales of Sinbad, the prince and princess, and a Baghdad festival. This fantastic performance is led by Music Director Designate Brett Mitchell, who takes the podium for this weekend of well-known works.

Musician picks!
Why some of our very own think you should see this performance!

Michael Thornton – Principal Horn
"OK, this one is personal! I love Jason Shafer as a player and a person. We hang out frequently in the wind locker room, and he has proven to be funny, quirky, and an all-around great musician. Sound familiar- these same qualities have been used time and time again to describe Mozart, and I can’t think of anyone better than Jason to play his ethereal clarinet concerto."

Peter Cooper - Principal Oboe
"Jason is our Principal Clarinetist and a great musician. This is his first concerto opportunity with the orchestra. It will be first class. Scheherazade is also one of my favorite pieces to play."

Jason Shafer - Principal Clarinet
"Well, I feel like I have to pick this one, because it's my first appearance as a concerto soloist with the Colorado Symphony! But I'm also honored to be performing such a masterwork; Mozart's Clarinet Concerto is truly beautiful, and the second movement in particular is the most moving and tender piece of music that any clarinetist will ever get to play. The second half of the program is a hit - Scheherazade shows off the virtuosity of the orchestra and captivates you with its amazing melodies."

Courtney Hershey-Bress - Principal Harp
"Come hear our fabulous principal clarinetist, Jason Shafer! He will be playing the Mozart Clarinet Concerto and this is his debut concerto with the CSO. Sheherazade ends this program and it is one of my favorite orchestral pieces to perform. The harp part is gorgeous!"

Roger Soren - Bassoon
"Mozart Clarinet Concerto with our star clarinetist, Jason Shafer. He's such a great colleague and musician, and the Mozart is a great piece. La Peri is always an exciting start to a concert, and I love the way our brass section performs this piece. Scheherazade is such a popular piece, and honestly, I never get tired of playing, or hearing this one!"

Claude Sim – Associate Concertmaster
"What a pleasure to work with world class caliber soloists who happen to be in the Colorado Symphony! Jason is truly representative of the new generation of star musicians that have no artistic limits. The Mozart will be out of this world. Also on the program, the perennial favorite RK’s Scheherazade, which will showcase the CSO once again as soloists."

Jason Lichtenwalter – English Horn and Oboe
"Principal Clarinetist Jason Shafer is a gregarious and funny guy. He jokingly refers to me as "Jason 1" because I preceded him in the orchestra, but I'll appropriately relinquish that title this week for his eagerly-anticipated solo debut.."

Tristan Rennie - Assistant Principal Basson
"One of the best wind concertos ever written performed by our outstanding principal clarinetist, followed by one of classical music's greatest works - Scheherazade!"

Susan Rockey Bowles - Cello
"Mozart Clarinet Concerto with Principal Clarinetist Jason Shafer - Simply, I love Mozart clarinet concerto and especially look forward to Jason's performance. Scheherazade is a beguiling piece."
