Copland’s Rodeo Conducted by Andrew Litton

Andrew Litton, conductor
Alban Gerhardt, cello

COPLAND Rodeo: Ballet in One Act
BARBER Cello Concerto, Op. 22
BRAHMS Symphony No. 2 in D major, Op. 73

Andrew Litton concludes his tenure as Principal Guest Conductor with the Colorado Symphony in a program worthy of his prolific and esteemed career. Maestro Litton revisits Copland’s rollicking piece of Americana Rodeo: Ballet in One Act, which Litton recorded and released with the Symphony and was named one of Colorado’s best classical albums of 2016. Masterful cellist Alban Gerhardt joins Litton onstage for a rare performance of Barber’s exceptionally challenging Cello Concerto, while Brahms’ rustic, energetic Symphony No. 2 — the Symphony that put him on the map — is the crown jewel of this concert. Bravo, Maestro Litton!

Description

As part of Andrew Litton's storied career as an artistic leader for the Colorado Symphony these past four seasons, he commands the podium as Principal Guest Conductor one last time, revisiting Copland's Rodeo: Ballet in One Act, last performed in 2013.

You're sure to recognize the popular melody of "Hoe Down" from Copland's Rodeo. Plus, on Brahm’s Symphony No. 2, you’ll hear one of the composer’s most uplifting and playful symphonies. Check out the 4th movement below—listen at least 30 seconds!

Boettcher Concert Hall is located in the Denver Performing Arts Complex at 14th and Curtis Streets in the heart of downtown Denver. It's easy to find and there are two large parking garages to the east and west of Boettcher. There are often multiple performances happening at DPAC at the same time, which leads to traffic congestion and lines to get into the parking garages. Be sure to leave plenty of time to get to DPAC—we don't want you to miss any of the music!
